My first encounter with Paul Hansen and his ultra rare 37 was at its debut in San Mateo, California at the 2002 Grand National Roadster Show, a strong contender for the main award, "America's Most Beautiful Roadster." Having owned an original all steel 37 Ford Club Cabriolet, I know how rare these cars can be. Ford made less than 1000 roadsters in 1937.
Known for the exclusive cars he builds, Tom Walsh along with his co-conspirator, Frank Mara, were enlisted to build Midnight Conspiracy while Brian Hill did the body modifications. But just a few on this rare car! Brian reworked the cowl area and laid the windshield post back 3" to achieve the "chopped look," shaved the body, tubbed the rear wheelwells and fabricated a custom firewall and dash with AutoMeter gauges, while Steve Moal fabricated an aluminum cover to smooth out the rear. Ron Souza shot the '37 with DuPont Azure Blue Metallic (great color!) and Ernie Oρata of Sound Innovations in Hayward, California designed and installed a killer Pioneer audio system with two Brax X1000 200 watt Amps. The talented Sid Chavers of Santa Clara, California created an interior of cream and blue leather complementing the timeless look of this exquisite roadster.
Tom and Frank perfected this '37's stance with a chassis consisting of a tubular cross-member set-up with polished Kugel Komponents independent front and rear suspension, Billet Specialties wheels inside Goodyear Eagle GTs with Wilwood disc brakes. Powered by a balanced and blueprinted Chevy 502 Big Block with GM Performance aluminum heads and HPC headers into 2 ½ polished stainless exhaust with Thrush stainless mufflers, a GM TH400 transmission with 2,400 stall converter, Lokar shifter and Driveline Specialties driveshaft, Midnight Conspiracy's 580 horses move this wild rod down the streets of Paul's hometown of Pleasanton, California.
It's nice to see a rare car like this falls into the right hands and by the looks of it Paul and his son, co-conspirator Erik, had an unbelievable time with this project! Incredible reconstruction!
