1935 Chevrolet Hi-boy

This 1935 Chevy hi-boy started out as an Old Chicago Standard in 1998 when Jerry Kjensrud bought the fiberglass body, parts and frame. The transformation of the car started after Jerry had already installed a ZZ4 motor, fenders, running boards and hood. A conversation with Jon, Darren and Charlie at Byers Custom and Restoration initiated a dramatic change of direction for Jerry and his ’35. The idea of modifying the a hi-boy was tossed around and promptly followed by fender removal and a search of old magazines for a concept drawing of a hi-boy Jerry had seen and knew he wanted to replicate.

With the idea of a hi-boy in mind, Jerry had to change the engine to a 502 fuel injected big block. Meanwhile, Charlie Marquard at Byers chopped the top three inches, laid back the grill shell four inches to insert a custom handmade stainless steel grill. He lengthened the wheelbase two inches and gave it a one inch body rake. But that was just the beginning. Charlie crafted custom side panels, hood and hood latches, shaved the doors with hidden hinges, incorporated a steel floor and rear steel roll pan with built-in tail lights and signal lights, giving the body of this hi-boy an overall solid reinforcement.

Darren Buell at Byers shot the hi-boy with PPG Light Chrome Yellow so that Jon Byers could follow Jerry's instructions to "make the flames wild." Jon certainly followed the instructions to the "T" as flames can be seen from every angle: doors, underneath the hood, hood side panels (remove the side panels and the flames continue to flow from the firewall and grill shell), driveline, beneath the rear deck lid and rear bottom of the car. Once flamed, Pyro received a clear coat of PPG Concept Clear.

Cream leather over metal sculpted panels throughout the interior were the creation of Terry Lee at Wizard Upholstery. The A/C is routed through the door panel armrests and is one very cool way to supply driver and passenger with very cool air!
