1935 Chevrolet

Wes and Bob Rydell

Our first glimpse of ’s 1935 Chevrolet fresh from the 50th Detroit Autorama and winner of the coveted Ridler Award was at Blackie’s 43rd Invitational, The Fresno Autorama (see our feature on Blackie’s 43rd Invitational in the October issue of Street Rodder.)

We arrived early before the show opened to the public and found the extraordinary award winner afloat silver-gray carpet and strategically placed in the center of the Convention Hall.  As the final detailing touches were made to the impressive display, members of the Rydell team were on hand to talk with us about this remarkable sedan and the overall reshape that had taken place during the building process. It was no surprise that Blackie bestowed his Best Custom Award to the Rydell’s Grand Master.

With two prestigious awards already claimed, we caught up with the Grand Master again at the Goodguys Del Mar Nationals. In a completely different setting, the Grand Master took on a different persona than found in Fresno . Here, the sedan took on a cool cruiser look in its front-of-the-pack position at the indoor show. Proportioned perfectly and low to the floor with doors and hood closed, the true, cool and compressed size of the car was revealed making one realize that this cut-down version of a Master Sedan redesigned by Chip Foose* and executed by Doug Peterson, was truly a masterpiece winning the 2002 Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance Award.
